Excel to CSV converter

Drop an .xlsx, .xls or .ods workbook, pick a sheet, and download it as CSV. Dates and formulas are exported as the values Excel shows.

How to use it

  1. Drop the workbook or choose it from your computer.
  2. Pick the sheet (or export each sheet as its own CSV).
  3. Choose delimiter and BOM, preview, then download.

Private by design

The conversion runs as JavaScript in this tab. Your data is not uploaded, logged or stored. There is no account and no file-size paywall.

What gets exported

Each cell is written as its displayed value: a formula exports its last calculated result, a date exports as Excel shows it (for example 2024-03-08), and a currency cell keeps its formatting if you choose “formatted text”. Choose “raw values” to get unformatted numbers instead.

Merged cells export their value in the top-left cell only; charts, colours and comments are not part of CSV and are dropped.

XLSX vs CSV in one line

XLSX is a zipped bundle of XML files that can hold many sheets, styles and formulas. CSV is plain text with one table and no formatting, which is why nearly every database, script and import screen accepts it.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by JavaScript in this tab and never leaves your device. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it keeps working.

Can I convert all sheets at once?

Yes. “Download every sheet” saves one CSV per sheet, named after the sheet.

Does it work with password-protected files?

No. Encrypted workbooks cannot be read in the browser; remove the password in Excel first.

Why are my accents garbled when I reopen the CSV in Excel?

Tick “Add UTF-8 BOM”. Excel uses it to recognise UTF-8.

How do I convert Excel to CSV without losing leading zeros?

Leading zeros survive here if they are stored as text in the sheet. If Excel already stripped them when the data was typed in, they are gone from the workbook too, and you need to restore them with a custom number format before converting.

Can I get JSON instead of CSV?

Yes, use the Excel to JSON converter.
