JSON to Excel converter
Paste JSON from an API, a log or an export and download an Excel workbook with one row per record and a column for every field, nested ones included.
Loading the tool…How to use it
- Paste JSON or JSON Lines, or drop a .json file.
- Choose how nested objects and arrays are flattened.
- Download the .xlsx.
Private by design
The conversion runs as JavaScript in this tab. Your data is not uploaded, logged or stored. There is no account and no file-size paywall.
How nested JSON becomes flat columns
A spreadsheet row is flat; a JSON record is a tree. Every converter has to decide how to squash the tree. Switch strategies and step through the record to see which column each value lands in.
{ "id": 7, "name": "Ada", "address": { "city": "London", "zip": "N1" }, "tags": ["math", "poetry"] }
| id | name | address.city | address.zip | tags.0 | tags.1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Ada | London | N1 | math | poetry |
Nested data in a flat grid
Excel needs a grid; JSON is a tree. Nested objects are flattened into dot-path columns such as address.city, and arrays into numbered columns (tags.0, tags.1) or a single cell of JSON text. The explainer below shows both strategies on a sample record.
Types are preserved
JSON numbers are written as Excel numbers so you can sum and chart them immediately, booleans as TRUE/FALSE, and strings as text, so a string like "00123" keeps its zeros.
Questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by JavaScript in this tab and never leaves your device. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it keeps working.
My JSON is one big object, not an array. What happens?
The first array of objects inside it (for example "items" or "data") is used as the rows. If there is none, the object becomes a single row.
Can I get CSV instead?
Yes, use the JSON to CSV converter.
Why is a column full of [object Object]?
That never happens here: nested values are always flattened or serialised as JSON text.
