Excel to JSON converter

Drop a workbook and get JSON: one object per row, keyed by the header row, with numbers and booleans kept as real JSON types. Export a single sheet or every sheet at once.

How to use it

  1. Drop the .xlsx, .xls or .ods file.
  2. Pick the sheet and the JSON shape: array of objects, array of arrays, or every sheet keyed by name.
  3. Copy the JSON or download the .json file.

Private by design

The conversion runs as JavaScript in this tab. Your data is not uploaded, logged or stored. There is no account and no file-size paywall.

How cells map to JSON

The first row of the sheet supplies the keys. Each following row becomes an object. Numeric cells become JSON numbers and TRUE/FALSE cells become booleans. Empty cells become null so every object has the same keys, which keeps the output easy to load into code or a database.

Choose “Formatted text” under cell values if you want values exactly as Excel displays them (for example dates like 3/8/24 or currency with symbols) instead of the raw stored values.

Dates in Excel

Excel stores dates as serial numbers counted from 1900, so a raw export shows 45359 rather than 2024-03-08. If your sheet has dates, switch cell values to “Formatted text” to get the date string Excel shows.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by JavaScript in this tab and never leaves your device. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it keeps working.

Can I convert all sheets at once?

Yes. Choose “Every sheet, keyed by sheet name” to get one JSON object with a property per sheet.

What if my sheet has no header row?

Choose “Array of arrays”: each row becomes a plain array and nothing is used as a key.

Can I go the other way?

Yes, the JSON to Excel converter writes JSON into a real .xlsx file.
